Welsh Youth Parliament joins National Assembly for first ever joint session, 24/06/2019 [W]
In what might be a world first, the Welsh Youth Parliament (WYP) held a joint session with the National Assembly for Wales on 24 June 2019.
At the end of the joint debate, the WYP and the Assembly both agreed on a joint political declaration.
The declaration says that the Welsh Youth Parliament’s work will be an important part of making decisions in Wales. It says that they will improve the ways young people are involved in making decisions in Wales, to meet Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
Members of the Welsh Youth Parliament have already given their views to the Assembly’s Children, Young People and Education committee on the Children (Abolition of Defence of Reasonable Punishment) (Wales) Bill. During the debate, Lynne Neagle AM, chair of the committee urged AMs and Youth Parliament members to continue working together.
