Relationships and Sexuality Education reforms to focus on healthy relationships

The Secretary for Education, Kirsty Williams AM, has announced that changes to relationships and sexuality education will focus on and emphasise forming and maintaining healthy relationships.

Currently SRE is a statutory part of the curriculum in Wales, but individual schools decide what their approach to the subject will be, sometimes not going beyond biological aspects of relationships.

The new focus will also include a broader understanding of sexuality fully inclusive of LGBTQ+ issues, and important issues like consent and domestic abuse.

The new curriculum will be in place in 2022, when RSE will become statutory for students 5 to 16. Students won’t be taught subjects for which they aren’t developmentally ready.
